2026 Korean Language Speaking Contest

The Korea Times is now accepting applications for the 3rd annual Korean Language Speaking Contest. This global competition invites foreign nationals and overseas Koreans to showcase their proficiency and passion for the Korean language.

Benefits and Prizes
Top Prize: Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Award (2.5 million won).

Professional Growth: Summer internship opportunities at The Korea Times for award winners.

Recognition: Certificates of participation and various category awards ranging from 300,000 to 1 million won.

Application Period: February 26 – May 7, 2026

Winners Announcement: May 26, 2026

Award Ceremony: June 4, 2026 (Tentative)

The Korean Cultural Centre Canada (KCC) is pleased to host a special Artists’ Talk with CHOI, Sejin and YOON, Sangyoon on Thursday, March 12, 2026 at 17:00 (ET).

Organized in conjunction with the exhibition <The Self Within Collective>, this talk offers audiences an opportunity to meet the artists, learn about their creative journeys, and gain deeper insight into their practices. Join us for this engaging occasion to connect directly with the artists, explore the expressive language of contemporary Korean painting, and discover the ideas and processes that extend beyond the exhibition space.

We are delighted to host an in-person screening of <Nakdong River> (1952) - a film shot and produced during the Korean War and digitally restored by the Korean Film Archive (KOFA), on Thursday, March 19, from 19:00 - 20:30 (ET), in partnership with KOFA and the International Film Festival of Ottawa (IFFO).

This screening is part of IFFO’s SAVE AS 2026 showcase, which highlights Korea’s leadership in film preservation and restoration. This year, SAVE AS showcases recent restoration projects and archival practices, exploring how national archives safeguard cinematic heritage while expanding international access to historically significant films.

About Nakdong River (1952)
<Nakdong River> was shot and produced during the Korean War, making it an exceptionally rare wartime cinematic work. The film was mislabelled as documentary footage, probably because the title sounded like a nature documentary. It wasn't until the 2020 inspection by the Korean Film Archive that it was finally identified as a feature-length fiction film.
Unlike many films during the war, the original negative survived perfectly intact, greatly enhancing its historical value. The film was digitally restored to UHD (4K) by KOFA in 2021, and it is officially designated as a National Registered Cultural Heritage of Korea.

Set along the Nakdong River defensive line, the film portrays the lives and struggles of people during the war and incorporates actual combat footage. Historians believe this footage was accessible because newsreels were frequently screened in theatres at the time, which adds authenticity and reality to the film.

2026 K-Pop Cover Dance Festival – Call for Competitors!

The 2026 K-Pop Cover Dance Festival, co-hosted by the Korean Cultural Centre Canada and The Seoul Shinmun Daily, is calling for contestants to participate in this year’s K-Pop cover dance contest.

The deadline to upload your team’s online submission for Canada is April 12, 23:59 (ET) & 20:59 (PT).

*Please read the instructions and rules clearly before uploading video submissions*

Teams that pass the online preliminary round will be able to compete in the Canadian finals, held at the Orpheum, Vancouver, on Sunday, May 31. The winning team of the Canadian finals will be granted the opportunity to advance to the World Finals, which will take place in Korea this autumn.
*Finalists will be announced in mid-late April.

[News] Special Exhibition of Korean Traditional Minhwa (Tracing the Cultural Origins within the Korean Wave – 2026 Korean Minhwa Invitational Exhibition)

The Korean Cultural Centre is pleased to share the exhibition news <Special Exhibition of Korean Traditional Minhwa>, which will take place at the Women’s Art Association of Canada (WAAC) in Toronto from February 3 to February 10, 2026.

Presenting traditional Korean Minhwa through a contemporary lens, the exhibition features works by approximately 50 invited artists, including Seongmi Cho, Kang Lee, and Okgeum Kim, and highlights the symbolic imagery and enduring appeal of Minhwa within the context of the Korean Wave.
